Most parents struggle to get their kids to wash their hands. The fact that you’re reading this, means you do too. But don’t worry. You’re not alone. When it comes to cultivating hand washing habits in kids, parents resort to instructing, reminding and lecturing. Which don’t work too well with kids. Which is why we came up with 3 fun ways to teach hand washing to your children.
You are a super hero!
Sometimes, it helps to turn the act of washing hands into a superhero story. Replace ‘wash your hands to be clean’ with ‘be a superhero and protect your hands against germs’. Make your kids feel like heroes, who are trying to save their hands from the enemy (germs). Thus, hand washing becomes a way for them to vanquish the enemy (again, germs) and slowly, but surely, become a habit.
Sing and dance
Choreograph a hand washing dance, right from wetting hands, to putting on the soap gel, to rubbing palms and rinsing. It is a great way to teach your kids to wash hands on their own. You can even take a popular song and sing in your own words to accompany the dance. For the kids, it is all fun. But it serves your purpose well!
In some cases, the best way to get clean is to get dirty. Start off by getting your kids to play with glitter. They will naturally get it all over their palms, fingers and knuckles. Then, ask them to wash it off. In the process of washing the glitter off, your children develop a good habit! Of course, it’s a trick that takes some effort clean off. But it’s worth it!
